Frequently asked questions.
These are the most common questions I’m asked. If you have additional questions feel free to email me at danielle@daniellewraith.com
How do I know which type of editing I need?
Most writers aren’t sure at first, and that’s completely normal. After reviewing your inquiry (and, if applicable, a sample), I’ll recommend the level of editing that will best serve your work and your goals.
Do you work with first-time authors?
Yes! Many of my clients are first-time authors. You don’t need to have everything figured out or feel “ready.” My role is to help you strengthen your work while building confidence in your voice and process.
Will you change my voice?
No. Preserving your voice is central to my editing approach. My goal is to clarify, strengthen, and refine what’s already there, not to rewrite your work into something that doesn’t sound like you.
What genres or types of writing do you work with?
I work primarily with fiction and memoir, including novels and book-length manuscripts. My focus is on story-driven work that values voice, emotional resonance, and narrative clarity.
If you’re unsure whether your project is a good fit, I’m always happy to take a look and let you know.
What does the editing process look like?
Once booked, you’ll receive:
A contract and timeline
A thorough edit using tracked changes and margin notes
An editorial letter (for developmental or evaluative edits)
Space for follow-up questions once you’ve reviewed feedback
The process is collaborative, thoughtful, and designed to feel supportive rather than overwhelming.
Do you offer sample edits?
Yes, I do offer sample edits. You can request one using the contact page here.
When submitting a sample, I typically recommend not sending the first 1,000 words of your manuscript. Those opening pages are often the most revised and polished, which can make it harder to assess what kind of editorial support will be most helpful.
Sharing a later section, one that hasn’t been revised quite as extensively, gives me a clearer picture of your writing as a whole and allows me to recommend the most appropriate level of editing for your project.
How long will it take you to edit my manuscript?
Timeline differs depending on the length of your novel, specific editing needs/requests, and publishing timeline. I'm flexible so please communicate your needs and I will do my best to accommodate them. Generally, a Developmental Edit can take anywhere between one to two months to complete. A Manuscript Critique generally takes less time than a full developmental and may be a better option for someone on a time limitation.
Are your editing fees based on a per-word or hourly rate?
I price Developmental Edits $0.03 per word for manuscripts that are 150k words or less. For novels that exceed this word count, pricing is renegotiated as it will take more time to edit. For manuscript critiques, pricing is $0.025 per word. Payment plans are also available. Please contact me here to get discuss options.
How much is a deposit for an editing project? Does this go toward the total amount?
I offer different payment plans to accommodate each individual client's needs. The deposit will vary depending on our agreement, but it always goes toward your total editing fee. You'll be asked to pay the deposit to "book" the month you choose to have your editing done. This helps hold both you and me accountable! Please contact me here to get discuss options.
Do you use a service contract? What does it entail?
Yes, once we agree to work together, the first thing you will receive is my editing service contract. This outlines what services you'll receive, the dates we've agreed upon, the pricing, deposit, etc. I also include a copyright clause to protect you and your work.
Do you offer rush edits?
Rush edits may be available depending on my schedule and project scope and include an additional fee. Availability is limited.
How soon should I contact you about working together?
As soon as possible! Because I tend to book out months in advance, please reach out as soon as you know you'll need editing services. This will help you get the slot you need to fit your publishing timeline. Please contact me here to get started!
How does ghostwriting work?
Ghostwriting projects typically include interviews or written notes, drafting, revisions, and final polish. The process is collaborative and flexible, designed to fit your schedule and comfort level.
